Mr. Zubyr Soomro – Chairman

Mr. Zubyr Soomro is a leading banker of international repute with more than 36 years of senior management experience spread across the Middle East, Africa, Turkey, UK and Pakistan with Citibank. He has also served as Chairman and President of United Bank Limited and successfully restructured the bank for privatisation. He is a member of Boards of numerous entities including the State Bank of Pakistan, Grameen Foundation USA, Grameen Jameel UAE, LRBT, Acumen Pakistan, and Aitchison College. Mr. Zubyr Soomro is also a Member of the Economic Advisory Council setup by the government in 2013 to oversee and advise on economic policies/issues. Following his retirement from Citibank, he established Hikmah Consulting in 2009,  a financial services consulting firm focusing on strategy, risk, and capacity building for institutions in the MSME sector, development and delivery of corporate governance programs for boards and senior management of commercial banks and Microfinance Institutions, and senior level sales for Fortune 50 companies around the world. His contribution to the local financial sector and especially his role in the financial sector reforms that he oversaw as the Chairman of the Pakistan Bank Association, merited him a Quaid-e-Azam centenary Gold Medal from the Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan. Both the industry and regulator regularly solicit his involvement in various forums and committees. He holds a BSc Honours in Economics from the London School of Economics, and a Masters in South Asian Studies from the School of Oriental and African studies, London University.

Qazi Azmat Isa- Board Member

Qazi Azmat Isa has 30 years of experience in development sector. He is currently the Chief executive of the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund which is a multipurpose autonomous development institution with interventions in microfinance, energy, infrastructure, disaster management, institutional development, livelihood enhancement and protection, health, education and disability. Prior to this he was with the World Bank working in the rural and social sectors for over 12 years. His last assignment was in Kabul, Afghanistan where he managed the largest community driven development program in the Bank’s portfolio as well as initiated a nationwide rural enterprise development program. He has served on many boards in a voluntary capacity, including as Chairman of the Society for the Protection of Child Rights, President of Aurat Foundation, Board Member with the World Wide Fund for Nature, LEAD and Civil Aviation Authority. He is currently one of the members of the Economic Advisory Council constituted by Senator Ishaq Dar, Finance Minister.

Dr. Tariq Hassan – Board Member

Dr. Tariq Hassan is an attorney and advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan who is currently the Chairman of the Audit Oversight Board of Pakistan and Member, Board of Directors, State Bank of Pakistan. He is a former Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan and has also served as an adviser to the Finance Minister of Pakistan on matters relating to law and economics. He has also been associated as Legal Counsel with the World Bank in Washington, DC, International Fund for Agriculture Development in Rome, and Shearman & Sterling in New York. Dr. Hassan has done his PhD in Juridical Science from Harvard Law School, USA. In addition to practicing law, he has been an adjunct professor of law at George Washington University and Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy in USA, and Department of Laws at LUMS University and International Islamic University in Pakistan.

Mr. Noor Ahmed- Board Member

Mr. Noor Ahmed is currently serving as Additional Secretary Finance. He holds a Master degree in Development Studies with specialization in Public Policy from the Institute of Social Studies, the Hague, the Netherlands and a MA in History from Punjab University. He has more than 27 years of experience of working with government departments and banks. He has served as Senior Joint Secretary Statistics Division, Chief Administration Federal Board of Revenue Islamabad, DG Privatization Commission, Joint Secretary Economic Affair Wing, Deputy Secretary Economic Affairs Wing Prime Minister Secretariat and Manager Development Khushhali Bank. Moreover, he has numerous research papers to his credit and his research papers on different subjects have been published in national and international journals.

Ms. Christiane Schmidt- Board Member

Ms. Christiane Schmidt holds an MBA and a M.A. in Middle Eastern Studies from Hamburg University. After joining KfW Development Bank in 1999 she has been covering various sectors, with a special focus on infrastructure, in particular renewable energy, and financial sector development. During her professional career, she has worked on various projects in Eastern Europe, MENA and Sub-Saharan Africa. She has also spent around 6 years as Vice President of KfW Ipex Bank structuring, negotiating and closing commercial transactions in export, project and corporate finance with clients in industry and infrastructure in Western and Eastern Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa.

For the last two years she has been covering KfW Development Bank’s portfolio in the financial sector of Pakistan. She currently also serves as Member of the Board of NRSP Microfinance Bank Limited.

Mr. Yasir Ashfaq- Chief Executive Officer

Mr. Yasir Ashfaq is working as Chief Executive Officer of Pakistan Microfinance Investment Company (PMIC). He was previously working as Chief Operating Officer of PMIC since August 2016.  Before joining PMIC, he has worked with Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund as Group Head, Financial Services Group in a similar role. Yasir has over 20 years of experience in financial sector of the country and has worked at senior management positions in commercial and investment banks. His areas of expertise include designing policy and strategy, corporate finance, portfolio management, treasury, finance and accounts, development finance, corporate finance, risk management, development of institutions and new financial products and approaches of delivery. He is an associate member of the Institute of Cost & Management Accountants (ICMA) of Pakistan and holds a Master’s Degree in Economics from University of Sydney, Australia.
